Meet Miso - the little fear biter that just needed to feel safe.

Meet Miso — The Little “Fear Biter” Who Just Needed to Feel Safe Every now and then, something prompts me to open an email or answer a call that I normally wouldn’t. My heart simply can’t take all the sad stories every single day. But on March 30, 2024, I opened a plea about a little dog whose life was running out of time. He had been labeled a “fear biter.” All six pounds of him. Oh, the damage he could do. 🙄 I read through his assessment, looked at that little face and knew his time was short. And once again, my heart jumped in front of my head and commanded my hands to type: I must save Miso. Miso arrived that night in the pouring rain. I bundled him up and brought him inside. With frightened little dogs, we always start in the bathroom. It’s large enough to give them space to move away if they choose, but small and quiet enough that they don’t feel overwhelmed. After everything I had read in the shelter notes, I was prepared for the worst. I sat down on the floor expecting that we might have a very long night ahead of us. Miso cautiously checked everything out. After I apparently passed the smell test, he took a long drink of water, ate a little food and listened intently to all the dogs on the other side of the door wondering who the new guy was. He was curious, but apprehensive. Eventually, I slowly reached out my hand, fully expecting a snap. Instead, Miso stood perfectly still and looked at me. I gently stroked the top of his head. And this supposedly aggressive little “fear biter” melted into my touch. He lowered his head into my hand and closed those beautiful eyes as if he had been waiting forever to feel a gentle touch. It wasn’t long before he climbed into my lap, curled himself into the crook of my arm and let out the deepest breath. A sigh of relief. And then Miso fell sound asleep. Safe. Warm. And finally at peace. I had every intention of taking things very slowly with this angry little creature I had been warned might try to take my hand off at every turn. Except that animal never existed. What I found instead was an incredibly sweet, gentle little soul who had been afraid. At some point in Miso’s life, someone had chopped off his tail. His hair naturally grows in cowlicks that can make it appear as though his hackles are always raised. Combine that appearance with a terrified little dog reacting to an overwhelming shelter environment, and suddenly he had a label that could have cost him his life. “Fear biter.” But things aren’t always what they seem. Once Miso understood that he was safe, the fear began to disappear. And the real Miso emerged. Today, he is one of the sweetest, cuddliest, most adventurous little guys you could ever meet. He loves being outside with all the sanctuary residents. He loves exploring. He loves tagging along on adventures. And more than anything, he never leaves our director’s side. Sometimes he’s tucked safely inside her sweatshirt. Other times, this six-pound wonder is running alongside the mule with the big dogs as though he’s ten feet tall. Miso doesn’t let a single moment of his second chance go to waste. He lives every day with pure joy in his heart. His story is also an important reminder of something we see far too often in rescue: A label is not an animal. Fear is not aggression. A terrified animal reacting to an unfamiliar and frightening situation isn’t necessarily showing you who they are. Sometimes you have to give them time, patience and the benefit of the doubt before you get to meet the beautiful soul hiding underneath all that fear. Never judge a book by its cover. Because sometimes underneath the scary label is a six-pound little dog who simply needed someone willing to reach out a gentle hand. And sometimes, if you’re very lucky, that little dog crawls into your arms, lets out a sigh… and never really leaves them again.
